The Gold Mechanic explains how the gold market actually works.
Not where the price is going next — how the machinery behind it operates, and how to read the data yourself.
Who writes this
My name is Reid Calloway. I’m a private trader focused on gold (XAU/USD). I run weekly macro analysis on this market, working from primary sources: Treasury yields and breakevens from FRED, positioning data from the CFTC, and employment and inflation releases from the BLS and BEA.
I am not a financial adviser, I hold no professional financial licence, and I have no affiliation with any bank, broker, fund or financial institution. I don’t sell signals, courses, subscriptions or memberships, and I don’t take affiliate commissions from brokers.
Why this site exists
Most commentary on gold skips the reasoning. It tells you what will happen instead of explaining why things move — and when the explanation doesn’t fit, it reaches for a story about manipulation rather than admitting the model is incomplete.
Everything here works the other way round: mechanisms, primary sources, and explicit limits on what the data can and cannot tell you.
How I work
Every figure is verified at source. If I cite a number, the series ID and the link are in the article. You should be able to reproduce anything I publish.
I separate fact from interpretation. A verifiable fact, a reasonable-but-uncertain reading, and an unfalsifiable narrative are three different things, and I try to label which is which.
I say when something is uncertain. Relationships in markets are strong tendencies, not equations. Where a framework breaks down, that belongs in the article too.
When I get something wrong, I correct it and date the correction. Every correction is logged publicly on the Corrections page.
What you won’t find here
No price targets. No entry or exit levels. No buy or sell calls. No “my bias this week”. No performance claims, account screenshots or profit figures. No broker promotions or affiliate links.
This is educational content about how a market works. It is not advice about what you should do with your money.
